Clifford, James L.. Biography as an Art; Selected Criticism, 1560-1960. New York, Oxford University Press, 1962.

An anthology of crucial importance; no wonder Prof. Zhao mentions it again and again. Reviewer S.C. Roberts: "His collection ranges from Bacon and Fuller and other seventeenth-century writers through the two following centuries to a veritable galaxy of contemporary critics; and his wide reading is further demonstrated by a selective, but lengthy, list of modern books and essays which contain relevant critical matter."
